Sky of Love (Koizora)

Astro is advertising a movie, the Sky of Love, right now. I saw the preview and realized that its something I’d already seen. Except, I saw it, as Koizora. On a Singapore Airlines plane, of course ;

Highly recommended. Great story of teenage love that cannot be (for long). The hardships, the trials, the tribulations, et al. Warning, its a tearjerker - its amazing what you do on a bloody plane.

From what I hear, it’s based on a cell phone novel. Only in Japan do you find new distribution mediums!

I picked this movie to watch because I thought it was going to be a light Asian cute romance movie, sort of like the Thai movie Seasons Change. But was I wrong… this movie has a lot of story to it and I think that it’s a lot lot deeper than it appears from the opening scenes. The main female role (Mika) is played by Yui Aragaki, a Japanese model turned actress. The story is told from the perspective of a grown up Mika, sitting on a train on the way home, of her life seven years back. It explores all the ideas of growing up and all the difficulties one may face: high school love, family difficulties and other issues (although probably not to the extremes Mika faced herself).

Since almost all Asian films can either be classified into the “close your eyes, your ears and be scared” or “non sense cute idol movie” or “cry your eyes out, this is really sad”, I think this one is the latter type. So if you’re looking for a sort-of heavy movie which isn’t ‘rai sa ra’ (has no sense), and don’t mind crying infront of the person you might be watching it with, then Sky of Love is the movie you should watch . My take? Watch it. You won’t be disappointed.
